Bindery

The practice of bookbinding began as a way of protecting parchment manuscripts with boards. In the Middle Ages, the art of fine binding rose to great heights. Books were rare and precious and many were covered exquisitely. Techniques of folding and sewing sheets together in small lots, taping the lots together, and adding outside protection has changed little from the medieval monastery to the modern bindery. With today’s technology, quality books can be mass produced economically with saddlestitching, perfect binding and coil binding.
